Inexperience

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

This is just a short post, a bit about me, and my lack of experience with all things internet-related.

As you can see, I haven’t done much in the last few days. No posts, no updating the theme of the page, nothing at all useful. I will in due course update the theme of the page from this default WP theme, as soon as I find one I like. I will also get around to tidying up the links on the right hand side of the page, adding whatever links I think might be interesting, and maybe also useful.

I’m guessing most people who might actually sit down and read through obscure blogs like this one, will be regular, proficient web users. I apologise for the travesty that is this page. Once I move back to Dublin (Ireland) after my summer in the back end of nowhere, I will have regular access to a broadband connection, which will make this a much easier task.

So, bear with me, and hopefully things will all work out in the end.

Please, post some comments, with any (constructive) criticism you may have, or suggestions on themes, hints and tips you may have on keeping a blog, that kind of thing!

On the joys of working with your family.

I enjoy working. The feeling of getting something done, be it for yourself or for someone else. Whether I am being compensated for the time I spend doing, or even if it is just to help someone out, out of the goodness of my own heart.

I also like my family. My immediate family, I’m talking about. We get along fine, we all have a similar sense of humour. Sure, we have the odd spat over something entirely stupid, but that’s no big deal.

My problem is when the two overlap. I run my own business, during the summer, that gives me a certain amount of spare time, as long as the work gets done, the rest of the day is my own.

My father also runs his own business, and employs my two brothers. Which is fine, although employing your children in a business has it’s own inherent problems.

My gripe this morning is, when I am free, and sitting around doodling on my laptop as I do, then all the things my father and brothers should be doing as part of their jobs are handed to me, and my mother. There is a certain amount of housekeeping to be done in any small enterprise, and I’m of the opinion that if you sign up to be your own boss, then you sign up for it all.

You don’t ask other people to check your mail for you, because you are too lazy to do it yourself. You don’t ask your wife to tidy the kitchen area, and clean up after you. You don’t ask me to start dealing with your customers, when you feel like going for a cup of coffee! I mean, come on!

Thankfully, the family business is not located at home. They have their own little unit in the community marina centre here in town, which means that if I don’t feel like getting involved, I don’t have to. I can just stay at home. But that’s where I work, so obviously it’s good to get out of there every so often.

Anyway, I guess this post doesn’t have much of a point, except as a general rant about my family. More about them anon, I would think.

Hello!

Right, so here we are.

After all the kerfuffle (is that how it’s spelled?), I have finally managed to get wordpress set up, and running.

I had thought that my first post would be easy enough to write, but that’s not the case. Is it ever, I wonder?

What is the point in keeping a blog, unless you have something specific to say? Is there a point to keeping a blog if all you are going to do with it is waffle interminably about nothing in particular?

I realise I’m slipping into rhetorical question mode. That may become a feature of this blog, if I manage to keep it up. I hope it isn’t a pet hate of anyone reading this!

So, I am not going to do a “Here is me. This is what I do. This is what I like.” That would be ever so slightly banal, I reckon. Maybe we should just take it easy, and perhaps over the next while, my interests should make themselves a bit clearer with every posting. Let’s take it slow.

I’m not sure either if my true identity should be revealed or not. I’m not worried about family and neighbours finding this site, I can’t picture any of them sitting down and trawling through pages and pages of material, just in case they find something interesting.

It’s more a case of, the less you know about me, the less your opinions might be clouded by any stereotypes or prejudices (and I’m not necessarily talking about negative ones) you may hold.

Yes, let’s keep it relatively anonymous for a while.

And we’ll see where we go from here…
